Towson, Md (August 17, 2011) – Today Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz encouraged all interested citizens to attend the annual Defenders Day at North Point celebration on Sunday, September 4 at Fort Howard Park. (Watch video: www.youtube.com/baltimorecounty).
Defenders Day at North Point, running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., commemorates the Battle of North Point and features two re-enactments of the battle (1 p.m. and 4 p.m.), living history encampments, food, exhibits, and opportunities to meet and support local civic and cultural organizations. Official ceremonies with remarks from dignitaries begin at 12:30 p.m. The event traditionally attracts 6,000 visitors.
The Battle of North Point was an important engagement in the War of 1812, now the center of a significant bicentennial planning effort. The official bicentennial celebration will kick off in June of 2012 and run through 2015.
“Get an early start on celebrating the War of 1812 bicentennial by coming to Defenders Day at North Point,” said County Executive Kamenetz. “It’s a great opportunity to witness a live re-enactment, enjoy a beautiful waterfront park and help preserve our proud 1812 heritage.”
Adding to the excitement of this year’s celebration, the historic home known as Todd’s Inheritance will be open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Defenders Day at North Point. Todd’s Inheritance served as an observation post, a courier station and a headquarters for American troops during the war period. The British burned the original Todd house as a reprisal against the support it gave to the American cause.
Getting to this year’s Defenders Day venues in Baltimore County is easy. Just take North Point Road south from the community of Edgemere. Todd’s Inheritance will be on your left, Fort Howard Park is at the end of the road. The events at Fort Howard Park are free.
